CASTIGLIONE DELLE STIVIERE is the main town in Alto Mantovano; it is renowned for its religious places related to Saint Aloysius (1568 - 1591) - San Luigi in Italian -, such as San Luigi basilica, that keeps the saint's relics, the Aloysian Museum, the XVII century Collegio delle Vergini with its wrought steel gratings.
Still, the Red Cross Museum is pretty important: actually it was here that Genevan banker Henry Dunant had the idea to found the meritorious organization in 1859. In the museum you can see a large collection of stretchers, carriages and surgical instruments.
Not far from there, MEDOLE parish church hosts an altar piece by Titian - where the risen Christ appears to His Mother – and a group of 8 terracotta statues by Modanino depicting the Deposition.
In GOITO - where bersaglieri, the infantrymen famous for their plumed hat, are celebrated – you may visit Parco delle Bertone (tel. 0376 686 676), a large nature reserve which is contained by Mincio river natural park: you will find many rare trees and a sanctuary for white stork.
You can easily reach Alto Mantovano villages riding along attractive cycle tracks; the Morainal Hills Tourist Association will surely show you the best itineraries.
