Quistello lies on Secchia right riverbank; its name might come from “Custellum”, an ancient river flooding into Po. There have been recent Roman archaeological finds in Nuvolato; still, precious Renaissance ceramics were found where the ancient castle once stood. You should visit San Bartolomeo church, which was built in 1732 with the former castle stones by architect Giovanni Maria Borsotto: it hosts a Via Crucis by Mantuan painter Lanfranco. The Pinacoteca Civica (id est City Gallery) hosts XIX-XX century paintings by important Mantuan artists. In Nuvolato, you may visit XI century San Fiorentino church (and its remains of XV-XVI century frescoes), and “Giuseppe Gorni” museum: Gorni, a famous XX century architect, left several sculptures and buildings in this area. You may promenade across Parco delle Golene della Foce (id est the flood plains nature reserve), between Secchia and Po rivers; still, you may taste typical food and wine, such as lambrusco, pears and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. Events: San Bartolomeo festival (second week of August) – Mushroom festival (second week of September) – “Matilde di Canossa a Nuvolato” historical celebration (in June) - San Rocco festival (second week of August).
