South - east of Mantua. San Michele parish church and palazzo Guerrieri - Gonzaga (nowadays a farmhouse) date to eighteen century. Sustinente name comes from Latin septigenti, which may have two references: to a Roman milestone (ad septigenti), or to dialect sostgnent “support”, with reference to the drains that regulated Po river floods.
In Sacchetta you may visit “Villa Malbona”, a former residence of marquises Cavriani, and Baroque Annunciazione church; inside, you can admire early XVIII century paintings by Giuseppe Bazzani, Canti and Schivenoglia. Precious furniture decorates the sacristy. Still, the cemetery beside the church is a small architectural jewel for its porch and central entrance hall.
In Sustinente, you should visit sumptuous Palazzo Guerrieri Gonzaga with its beautiful park, along the way to Ostiglia, and three nave San Michele Arcangelo parish church (1792); it hosts a beautiful organ and choir by cabinetmaker F. Bergamaschi.
