Sermide was founded by the Romans. From 1339, it was ruled by Gonzaga family, who built a strong castle with eight towers: today, only the city tower still stands, beside the XIX century town hall.
Santi Pietro e Paolo parish church is in the centre of the village; it was built in 1865 in a neo-gothic style and seriously damaged during II World War bombings, then built again. The Capuchin church stands on Po south riverbank; it was built in 1560, as a part of the convent, which was destroyed in XVIII century; inside, you can admire a monumental XVII century golden wooden tabernacle.
Still, you can appreciate XI century Romanesque parish in Santa Croce.
You may cycle or walk along fascinating nature itineraries along Po riverbanks. Near Schiavi island, not far from Sermide, you may visit Digagnola nature reserve, hosting an observatory; it is a part of Gruccione flood plain natural park, a 388 hectare wide reserve instituted in 2004.
Sermide is famous for its high quality melons. This fruit has become almost a brand name for the area.
