San Giorgio lies just north-east of Mantua.
The medieval San Giorgio village was completely destroyed by Napoleon troops to build new fortifications to protect Mantua.
Madonna dei Miracoli parish church was built in 1560.
Only "Ostello di Sparafucile" – id est, Sparafucile's hostel – remains from that period; its name comes from Verdi's “Rigoletto” character who kills by mistake the protagonist's daughter Gilda.
Its name, "San Giorgio di Mantova", became official in 1867. Just after World War II, it yielded Virgiliana and Frassino hamlets to Mantua. Its chief hamlet today is Mottella.
