Mantuan typical products are pretty similar to Po Valley ones. And agricultural produce is very important.


Mantuan typical products are pretty similar to Po Valley ones. And agricultural produce is very important. Pig farming here exists since the Etruscan times. In here you can eat any part of pork, but salami and sausage are the real local jewels. Salami may also be flavoured with garlic; sausage is a fresh meat, that you can eat grilled or in the famous risotto alla pilota.
You can not miss two extraordinary cheeses, such as Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano; and Mantua is the only province in Italy where they are both made.
Still, local wines are becoming more and more high quality products. On the morainal hills South of Lake Garda they produce merlot, pinot-chardonney, cabernet sauvignon, pinot blanc, pinot gris and rosé wine, while South of Po river they produce lambrusco.
Rice, especially vialone nano, is another Mantuan agricultural produce since XVI century.
They grow also many kinds of vegetables; it is enough to bring to your attention pumpkins, which are the central ingredient of Mantuan tortelli.
But how to miss PGI melons and pears, onions, truffles...
Mantua has really a wide range of agricultural produce, that make its cookery of the highest quality.
